About Us
The Portage Project is committed to creating and enhancing quality programs which promote the development and education of all children and families. In fulfillment of this mission, the Project operates programs that offer direct services to children and families, which provide training and technical assistance to programs serving young children and their families, and which develop and distribute materials to support quality early childhood programs. Although the specific activities within the Portage Project programs vary, they are all centered and guided by the children and families served by the programs.

The Portage Project was originally created in response to the need to provide services in a rural community to young children with disabilities. In the early 1970's the concept of offering home based services designed to support the parents' role as the first and most important/influential educator of their children was quite unique. The work of the Portage Project continues to evolve as we learn through our experiences with families, organizations, and research. The following core values guide the work of the Portage Project: Relationship-Based, Reflective, Family Centered, Ecological, and Strength-Based. Studies on the impact of intervention are showing that the relationship between child and caregiver are significant building blocks for development. Our work with early intervention programs has shown the importance of reflection on our work with families as a key to providing truly family centered services. Using an ecological approach is not only supported by research but also by legislation that requires that services be provided in the child's natural environment.

Our work with relationship-based intervention has created a new awareness of the influence of organizations and supervision on the design and provision of early intervention services. As we learn more about relationship-based intervention, we are shaping our training and technical assistance with programs to incorporate these concepts.
